At baseballsgreatesthitters.com. our question is, Why is 60 still a milestone number? We feel the numbers 60 and 61 are still considered to be “untainted numbers” As we check our baseball history, in 1927 Babe Ruth sets the new season (154 games) record
by knocking out 60 Home Runs, that record stood for 34 years!!!! Along comes Roger Maris in the 1961 season (162 games) tops Ruth’s record hitting 61 round-trippers Re-capping, the 60 home run milestone numbers topped by only two players in “71 years” (1927 to 1998)
In the 1998 season, we see “ two players” pass the 60 home run mark in the same season, Mark McGwire smashes the record hitting a total of 70 and Sammy Sosa follows with 66 home runs, In four year period, the 60/61 home run mark has been topped a total of 6 times-

Looking back in baseball history, the 60 Home Run mark was topped twice in 71 seasons but accomplished six times in four years?
This clearly explains why the 60/61 number is, to this day, still considered by many baseball fans to be a “True Record”
Though Aaron Judge is on pace to hit 60 home runs, keeping up with this pace in late August and the month of September can be a very tough road…..but, time will tell.
Also, keep in mind, that there’s a big advantage for both Ruth and Maris, Babe, batting third, was followed by Lou Gehrig hitting cleanup, and Roger Maris had Mickey Mantle.
Check the chart with some of baseball’s most notable players who have hit 24 or more home runs in their first 60 games of the season, followed by their season totals.
Please note, we did list Barry Bonds on our chart, at baseballsgreatesthitters.com, we feel prior to his 2001 season, Barry Bonds was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history and he did put up Hall of Fame career numbers.
