Steroids Era Summary

The Steroid Era….The Record Books….and The Hall of Fame.

The Steroid Era….How much damage was actually done to the Record Books and Baseball History? The consensus of the media, whether sports writers, sports talk radio hosts and the majority of the fans feel that the record books have been damaged beyond repair. At baseballsgreatesthitters.com, we somewhat disagree. The discussions and debates concerning the era has been narrowed down to a group of players that fit into the same category: the home run hitters as well as the run producers. To give an accurate account of who used, who didn’t, how widespread was the use, how it affected the players production is all guesswork. The fact of the matter is, players who used P.E.D’s in this era, but are not Hall of Fame candidates and have had little or no impact on the record books or milestones, will go unnoticed and be forgotten. When we look back at this era in the next 5 to 10 years and the dust settles, the number of players who have had any effect on the record books and the history of the game will be narrowed down to 15 to 20 players. We feel we have a possible solution of giving this era in the best positive look.Obviously the record books can never be changed but the “tainted” numbers should be high lighted with a footnote with a full explanation of how these milestone numbers were achieved. In Cooperstown, where the names of the record holders are listed, recognize these players as the greatest of their era, who have put up Hall of Fame numbers and did have Hall of Fame talent, but never give them the privilege of ever being inducted members of Baseballs Hall of Fame.

Listed Below are 5 Groups of Baseball Record Book Charts

  1. Single Season Home Run Leaders
  2. Career Home Run List
  3. Career R.B.I. List
  4. Career Runs Scored List
  5. Career Hits List

When a baseball fans examine the single season home run leaders, most fans would appreciate the results of the chart on the right. Roger Maris would once again be the Home Run King, a few players,(Luis Gonzalez, Greg Vaughn, Brady Anderson) do not fit in with this elite group of sluggers, but most of the players listed do give an accurate account of baseballs’ memorable home run seasons. Looking at the career home run list on the right, we feel this is a very accurate account of baseballs’ top home run leaders. The career lists of R.B.I.’s and Runs Scored on the right also appear to give an accurate account of the top run producers in baseball history. The 3,000 Hit Club ( excluding Rafael Palmiero) has remained intact and not really effected by the inflated numbers of the steroid era. From 1876 to opening day 2015 there have been 18,408 major league baseball players, as baseball fans, should we allow a group of 15 to 20 players cheat us of the history of the game that we grew up with and love. At baseballsgreatesthitters.com ,we chose to to begin our research with 9 players. We feel the “Tainted” numbers put up by these 8 Players, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa,Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro, Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez are responsible for most of the damage to the Baseball Record Books.

The Charts on the left show the leaders as they appear in the Baseball Record Books as of December,2014. The Charts on the right will show how the Baseball Record Books would look if only 8 Players linked to P.E.D. use were removed from the “Tainted” Record Books.
