Baseballs Greatest Hitters of All Time

ERA 5 The Pitching Era 1965 TO 1977

Average home runs per team per year in this era : 120.72

The Pitching Era's somewhat chilling effect on baseball in the 1960s and 70s

During the pitching era we saw a decrease in home run production as well as overall offensive numbers for the first time in baseball history.  Great pitchers such as Bob Gibson, Juan Marichial, and Catfish Hunter dominated the game with their fierce bravado and overpowering stuff.  Nonetheless there were still a number of great hitters which defined this Era such as Carl Yazstremski, Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson and Joe Morgan.

Baseball in the 1960s and 70s saw some new rules and teams

This era's pitching dominance led to Major League Baseball lowering the mound from 15 inches to 10 inches in 1969.  During these years, the league also expanded by 2 new teams as well as split into the American and National leagues with Divisional play.
