How Baseball was affected by World War II

Era 3 is very much defined by the impact World War II had on Major League Baseball.  After the 1941 season, many players specifically the main stars of the league such as Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, and Hank Greenberg all served our country during the prime years of their career.  It has been said that if not for their leave of absence to the war, Greenberg and DiMaggio could have possibly hit 500 career Home Runs, and Ted Williams could have possibly reached the 700 Home Run mark.

The significant milestones in baseball during the World War II years.

In spite of the war and its effect on the game, the players of this era set incredible milestones and broke barriers.  Stars such as Stan Musial and Mel Ott left their mark on the game specifically with their offensive power numbers.  Home run power hitters were much more prevalent during the war years than previous eras of baseball.  We also saw Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 56 straight games and saw the last .400 hitter in MLB to this day, both which occurred in 1941.  In addition, we saw saw one of the most important occurrences in cultural history when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947.  All of this leaves us to wonder how much more the players during World War II could have acheived if the War was not going on and they had the same advantages of the players of other era's.
